While in Texas for our cousin Matt's wedding, we completed our 12th state hike completed in 2014. We were joined by my sister Courtney and her husband Rob. (More Pictures)

Freedom Push Chair

Freedom Push Chair by: Advanced Mobility Kellisa's new chair arrived about a week ago. Since we've been very busy, I wasn't able to assemble the chair until this afternoon. Kellisa watched with great excitement as I opened the box and got the chair ready for our first walk in our living room. The chair was easy to assemble and we were ready to go in a matter of a few minutes. You may notice that this chair looks like our modified "off-road" chair (Independence) we've been using for a couple of years. That's because the Freedom  is made by the same company, Advanced Mobility. Kellisa had outgrown her Independence chair and the Freedom is the next size up. We didn't have time to test the chair on a trail, but we did have time to walk 3.34 miles around our neighborhood. You can see Kellisa is excited in the picture above and she is actually signing "yes" because I asked her if she liked her new chair. We are looking forward to

Special K

Sadly, Lisa’s father passed away 5 years before Kellisa was born. That left my dad, Jeff as the only grandfather Kellisa would ever know. My dad desperately wanted to be surprised about the sex of our twins and wanted to wait until their birth. We shared the same feelings, but once the pregnancy started to go into life and death circumstances, Lisa and I decided to find out, so we could start calling our little lime sized babies by their names instead of Baby A and Baby B. Since we were faced with losing one, we wanted to call her by her name for as long as possible. It’s wasn't the first time we didn’t honor my dad’s wishes as we told him Lisa was pregnant with Kirsten and Kellisa.    Shortly after losing Kirsten, while Kellisa was fighting for her life in the NICU, my dad started calling Kellisa his Special K. He would kiss his index and middle finger before gently touching them to some part of exposed skin on Kellisa while she lay in her incubator. He would talk softly to

Independence Trail West

Click on picture for larger version South Yuba River State Park Nevada County, CA   June 2017 Distance: 3.14 miles Rating: 2 Type: Out & Back. Elevation: Almost level. Surface: Dirt & Wooden Flumes. Nearest City: Nevada City, CA Location: Just over 6 miles from Nevada City on Highway 49 North. Parking: 1 disabled spot. Bathroom: At trailhead. Water: Bring your own. The Independence West Trail is recognized as the first Wilderness Trail in the country for all abilities. We were surprised that it took us a year before we realized that we lived less than 50 miles from this historic trail. Once known, we were at the trailhead in less than a week. It was nice to find a disabled parking spot adjacent to the trailhead. Despite being along the highway, we had more than enough room to unload the chair and safely transfer Kellisa. The trail was created from the old Excelsior Ditch high above the Yuba River. The path hugs the hillside
