A Day in El Paso

El Paso
Texas

March 27, 2009

We landed in El Paso around noon after spending an unexpected night in Houston because we missed our connecting flight due to bad weather which caused us to circle above the Bayou City for two hours. After gathering our baggage and selecting the rental car, we found a great Mexican establishment for much needed refueling before an afternoon of fun.

After lunch, we headed to the Wyler Aerial Tramway in Franklin Mountains State Park. While on vacation in Gatlinburg, TN a couple of years prior, we learned how much Kellisa loves ski lifts and trams.
The tramway is a four minute, 2,600 foot ride to the top of Ranger Peak (5,632 feet above sea level) on a steel cable with a diameter of only 1 3/8 inches while the car rocks 240 above the side of the mountain.

El Paso, the Rio Grande River, and Ciudad Juarez spread out far below:

Kellisa loved the breeze while wheeling around on the accessible platforms:

We spent the rest of the afternoon at the El Paso Zoo:

I had to crawl while pulling and pushing Kellisa through tunnels to get her to this vantage point in the middle of the prairie dog town. Lisa captured Kellisa's smile perfectly in this picture and I can still hear her giggles and yelling for more as I struggled. My note from this day just over 8 years ago explains the WHY so well, "I need to get Kellisa to as many places like this...while I still can!" This hits hard as Kellisa is approaching her 18th birthday because things are getting hard for me to do and I worry about how much time we have left. I fear the day when I can't help Kellisa do something that she desperately wants to do.

  1. Hey, very nice site. I came across this on Google, and I am stoked that I did. I will definitely be coming back here more often. Wish I could add to the conversation and bring a bit more to the table, but am just taking in as much info as I can at the moment. Thanks for sharing.
