A Wheelchair Guide to Potter Park Zoo

 Lansing, MI

July 30, 2025

We were in Michigan for 11 days so Egypt could attend a nursing camp at the University of Michigan. We wanted to explore outside while Egypt was learning, but we found it to be uncomfortably hot and humid. We did get outside for a couple of hours while visiting the Potter Park Zoo in Lansing, MI.

It was nice for a smaller zoo and we found it mostly accessible. A few gravel paths might be difficult or impossible for some, but we managed. Kellisa's highlights include: fun under water misters with mom, the wildlife overlook bridge, the river otters, and not surprisingly, the reptile house. Not a bad way to spend some time.

 The Grounds

Roseville, CA

20 years ago, we purchased a small camper so we could take Kellisa deep into the Okefenokee Swamp in Georgia to get her as fas away from fireworks as possible.

Little Kellisa couldn't handle the unexpected and loud noises. It was terrifying to her. She would scream and cry uncontrollably. We would lay with her while covering her ears, but there was nothing we could do. It would take hours to finally calm her after the last firework exploded. For parents, it was excruciating.

Besides getting away from the noise, we enjoyed many trips with that camper, especially on July 4th and New Year's Day!

Kellisa has matured over the years and she not only handles the noise of fireworks, but can't get enough.
